What is a Fire Marshal? A Fire Marshal, also known as a Fire Warden, is a person responsible for Fire Safety measurements within a company and/or a building. The Fire Marshal has to undertake professional training with regards to what precautions need to be taken, how to maintain fire extinguishers, maintaining the fire evacuation details in place together with fire exists, fire lights and fire alarms.
By law every company or building must have Fire Marshals in place for the safety of the employees and any visitors. The number of Fire Marshals needed will be noted upon undertaking a Fire Risk Assessment. There are businesses that are classed as high risk therefore they need more Fire Marshals trained, i.e. care homes, hotels, schools, building sites, etc.
This course covers the role of the designated fire marshal. It also gives you the opportunity to learn about the different types of fire extinguisher and how to use them correctly (due to environmental issues there will be no live demonstrations).

This course is suitable for those who are responsible for overseeing fire safety, designated fire marshals and anyone who needs to know how use the means of escape safely and when to evacuate.
What you will learn?
The course will present an insight into fire regulations and general fire precautions. It aims to provide you with the knowledge to be become a fire marshal or a fire warden.
Course content
Explain how fires are caused in the workplace
Describe the components of the fire triangle
Identify the hazards during or after a fire, including the products of combustion
Describe the characteristics of fire and smoke spread
State the different methods used to identify and control fire hazards
Define the term ‘means of escape’ in relation to fire hazards
Outline typical components for means of escape from fire hazards
Describe methods of fire detection and raising the alarm
Describe the principle of how fires are extinguished
Describe how portable fire-fighting equipment should be used safely
Identify common fixed fire-fighting systems and where they might be used
Outline the duties of employers and employees with respect to fire safety in the workplace
Outline how to undertake a simple fire safety inspection in the workplace
Describe the stages involved in a fire risk assessment
State the role and function of fire wardens/marshal in their workplace:
on a day-to-day basis
during an emergency
if they are not in their designated areas of responsibility when the alarm is raised
Outline the content of a fire safety briefing
Course timing:
Course starts between 9.30-1.00pm, 1/2 day course , approx 4 hours , including breaks.
Assessment method:
This qualification is assessed through a 30-question multiple-choice question examination. The duration of the examination is 1 hour. Successful learners must achieve a score of at least 20 out of 30.
