I love semi permanent make-up and the difference it makes to people’s faces. What Is Semi Permanent Make-up? Semi permanent make-up (also known as permanent cosmetics, derma graphic art, micro pigmentation or cosmetic tattooing) is a procedure whereby minute particles of natural and synthetic iron oxide colour pigments are implanted around 2mm below the skin surface using a hand piece tool that holds a sterile needle grouping. The depth of pigment implantation varies depending on which area of the face is being worked on. Why is it Semi Permanent and not Permanent? A conventional tattoo is implanted into the skin at 3.5mm below the exfoliating layers of skin whereas SPM is implanted at around 2mm (depending on the area of the skin where pigment is being implanted). Other factors include the inks (pigments) which are being implanted. A permanent tattooist would use inks which contain carbon (which do not leave the skin readily) whereas SPM tattooists use inks which contain oxides (which do leave the skin readily). How Long Does it Last? SPM can last from around 18 months to 5 years. It is important that cosmetic tattoos fade out over time as adjustment to the make-up is needed as people age. As we age, things like skin colour, skin texture and hair colour change so your make-up will need to be adjusted to suit. Someone who suited a dark vibrant lip liner or heavy black eyeliner in their 20’s may opt for a more modest and subtle look in later life. Who is SPM Suitable for?
